We are a grade 6/7 class on Salt Spring Island in British Columbia, Canada. We are excited to spend the month learning more about amateur radio with regular mini lessons on bands, antennas, phonetics and more. With every contact we work together to log it, then look up the callsign on QRZ to find the location, and add another pin to our world map showing all the contacts we have made over the year.
For our class station, we have a Kenwood V71a hooked up to a Comet GP-9 which provides VHF and UHF coverage. There is a TNC-X hooked up to a laptop that also allows us to send and receive Winlink messages. For HF coverage we have a Yaesu 991a that was kindly donated by a silent key VE7COG and is hooked up to a Comet CHA-250HD vertical on top of the school roof. We also have an AREDN dish hooked into the local network allowing for VOIP and other digital communications.
